Punk Rock Religion

My first major project examined how Christian Hardcore and Taqwacore “Muslim” punks express and exercise religion in a defiant music subculture. This research has been published in high profile journals like Gender & Society, Sociology of Race & Ethnicity, and Sociology of Religion, and featured in top undergraduate readers, Mapping the Social Landscape and Race, Class, & Gender. To carry out this research, I attended music shows and festivals, traveled to ministry workshops, interviewed performers and fans, and analyzed the song lyrics, show flyers, and message boards of two scenes - one mostly made up of second-generation immigrant youth from South Asia and the other White evangelical Christian.
